Who I Am

Hi, my name is Nathan Meulenbroek and I'm a part of the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Calgary. I have Bachelor’s degrees in computer science and physics, which taught me to explore, solve problems in unique ways, and appreciate interdisciplinary approaches. This motivated me to pursue a highly interdisciplinary graduate program where I can apply my technical knowledge to medical research. I have found value in this approach both in terms of personal growth, as well as the connections that I have created with passionate and creative individuals pursuing similar goals.

I am passionate about giving back to my immediate community through volunteering and leadership with community organizations. My goal is always to contribute in meaningful, lasting, and sustainable ways, enacting organizational change that will continue to leave a positive impact for future generation.

My Research

My graduate research explores medical ultrasound imaging using a new type of ultrasound sensor that is able to provide directivity information about recorded signals. This information has vast and exciting implications for existing reconstruction methods, where we hypothesize that it will increase image quality, decrease computational complexity, and decrease imaging cost. We apply this to two types of ultrasound imaging (passive cavitation imaging and ultrasound computer tomography), seeking to demonstrate the benefits of this new transducer technology.

My undergraduate research explored signal processing techniques and how to account for the non-linear effects of the skull bone on ultrasound signals. As a part of this research, we showed that after passing through the skull, signals are delayed in a quasi-linear way. Thus, we used multivariable linear regression, a type of machine learning, and showed it to be significantly better at estimating these delays that existing automated techniques. These results were published in IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control in 2020, at the end of my undergraduate degrees.
